L’Œuvre d’Orient recently carried out a high-level mission across Syria, visiting Damascus, Homs, Latakia, Kessab, Rassaniyeh, Qnaye, and Aleppo.
Led by Monsignor Hugues de Woillemont, Director General of L’Œuvre d’Orient, the delegation also included Vincent Gelot, Country Director for Lebanon, Syria, and Jordan, and Damien Chenel, Administrative and Financial Director.
Throughout the mission, the delegation conducted extensive field assessments to evaluate the humanitarian situation, review progress on reconstruction efforts, and pursue diplomatic initiatives aimed at securing the restitution of historic Christian Church properties that had been confiscated.
Despite ongoing concerns over the country’s stability and security, the delegation witnessed the unwavering determination of religious communities, clergy, and local residents to remain on their ancestral lands.
The delegation also visited sites of particular historical significance to the Armenian people, including Deir ez-Zor and Markada, as well as Ras al-Ayn, where its members met the last remaining Armenian resident.
Through strengthened operational oversight and institutional partnerships, L’Œuvre d’Orient reaffirmed its longstanding commitment to supporting the stability of local communities, restoring cultural heritage, and ensuring a dignified and lasting Christian presence in Syria, alongside all citizens of the country.
L’Œuvre d’Orient calls on relevant institutions, donors, philanthropic partners, and international organizations to join this vital mission: restoring hope, safeguarding historical heritage, and securing the enduring presence of Christians in the Middle East.
