The Heartbeat of a Land: The Triumphant Performances of the "Shoushi" Dance Troupe

On the evenings of July 10 and 11, 2026, the Hovhannes Boghossian Hall in Bourj Hammoud became the setting for moments of artistic excellence, profound emotion, and aesthetic delight, as the "Shoushi" Dance Troupe of the Mesrobian Armenian Catholic Higher School captivated audiences with two remarkable performances.

Featuring dancers from various age groups, the performances filled the packed auditorium with feelings of pride, nostalgia, and sorrow, echoing the trials endured in recent years by our beloved Lebanon and Armenia.

Far more than a cultural event, the performances embodied the educational mission embraced by Mesrobian School: to form well-rounded individuals, both Lebanese and Armenian, whose education extends beyond the classroom. These triumphant performances offered the audience an exceptional artistic experience, one deeply rooted in meaning and enduring values.

Presented under the title "The Heartbeats of a Land," the production became a spiritual bridge linking the painful past and resilient hope of the Armenian and Lebanese peoples. At a time when both Armenia and Lebanon bear the wounds of immense loss and continue to face daunting challenges, the performance reminded us that a homeland continues to breathe through the culture of its people. Each dance reconstructed what had been broken by the hardships endured by our nations. The choreography proclaimed that, just as Christ rose from the dead, the spirit of a nation can also rise from the ashes, sustained by a "heartbeat of resilience" that refuses silence and extinction.

This vibrant artistic vision unfolded through twenty choreographed pieces, which together portrayed the indomitable spirit of the Armenian people. The performances celebrated the heartbeats of Service, Unity, Roots, Strength, Guardianship, Celebration, Freedom, Identity, Diversity, Renewal, Love, Memory, Faith, Brotherhood, Tradition, Friendship, Dignity, and Resilience, transmitting these values from the stage to the audience with warmth and emotion.

On stage, the continuity of the Armenian national heritage came to life through the 93 dancers of the Shoushi Dance Troupe, forming an unbroken chain across generations. The "Arevig" group (Grades 1–3) appeared as the first rays of dawn, followed by the confident brilliance of "Asdghig" (Grades 4–6). The determination of "Ararad" (Grades 7–8) and the courage of "Ardziv" (Grade 9) paved the way for the strength of "Vahakn" (Grades 10–12), while "Hayortik," the alumni group, brought the performance to its conclusion as faithful guardians of the school's heritage.

This artistic achievement was the result of dedicated collective effort. In his address, Mr. Gregoire Kaloust, Principal of Mesrobian Armenian Catholic Higher School, paid tribute to the exceptional professionalism and artistic vision of choreographer and dance instructor Avo Karakeshishian, whose leadership has elevated the Shoushi Dance Troupe to an outstanding artistic standard.

Special words of appreciation were also extended to Mrs. Seda Simidian and her support team for their tireless organizational efforts, as well as to the Cynthia Tavoukjian Foundation for its unwavering support of both the performances and Mesrobian School. Gratitude was likewise expressed to the parish of Holy Savior Church and to the families of the students, whose trust and encouragement made this success possible.

As the Principal emphasized in his speech, Armenian culture remains alive because it lives within our youth. The triumphant performances of the Shoushi Dance Troupe demonstrated that the victory of the human spirit over adversity is inevitable. Mesrobian School will continue to be a home for that spirit and intellect, preparing new generations to preserve and strengthen their homeland through creativity, perseverance, and unwavering faith.
