The students of the Mesrobian Armenian Catholic High School celebrated St. Vartan Day by reaffirming their vows to be faithful to the legacy left by these Armenian saints: for Motherland and Faith.

The school’s students paid tribute to the heroes of the Battle of Avarayr through four separate events that included several performances. The speakers' speeches were intended to convey important messages, highlighting in particular the significance of the celebration in the present day for the new generation.

The performances of the students dedicated to the festival were distinguished by their sincerity and careful preparation, thus revealing the great work done by the teachers in charge.

Miss Isabelle Levonian, a staff member of the school, addressed the students of the elementary section, while Ms. Maral Harboyan, who collaborates at work with the radio station Vana Tsayn ("Voix de Van") spoke for students in primary and middle school.  Ms. Srpouhi Djénanian, pedagogue, spoke for students in the high school. The speakers exposed to the students the historical conditions of the Battle of Avarayr and the battle’s significance for the Armenian people. They spoke of cultural degradation and indifference to national issues, that jeopardize the Armenian identity, and against which we must rebel with the same courage, the same conscience and the same faith as did St Vartan and his followers in the face of the ultimatum of Yazdegerd II, king of Persia.

At the end of the events, Mr. Gregoire Kaloust, principal of Mesrobian High School, delivered a closing speech. He noted that in comparison to thousands of Armenian children and adolescents scattered throughout the world, students at Armenian educational institutions such as Mesrobian should feel lucky and proud to live as Armenians, speaking, singing and reciting poems in their mother tongue, for the defense of which Vartan and his companions sacrificed their lives. He called on students to not only keep these values alive in their souls, but also to spread them, especially among young people isolated from their sense of national identity as Armenians.
